Some highlights of work from classes I'm taking while pursuing my degree in Earth Systems Science, that I thought might be interesting to somebody.

Graduate Work

Spring 2004

Computational Science 759 - Biogeography
Some factors that influence species diversity in riparian environments (i.e. the plants that grow next to streams).

Geology 601 - The Lithosphere
The use of remotely sensed data to monitor esturaine processes in the Chesapeake Bay.

Fall 2003

Geography 304 - Population Geography
I mapped population density and worldwide deforestation (which I found by looking for decreased NDVI in forested regions) to see if there is a spatial connection between the two. This is a PDF document, which is the way I will post my papers from now on.

Spring 2003

Computational Science 754 - Earth Observing Remote Sensing Data Systems
I made a searchable web database of  global land cover and NDVI for this class. Did computer programming for the first time in order to create that! I also did time series analysis of the Southern Oscillation Index (which determines El Nino).

Computational Science 655 - Physics and Chemistry of the Atmosphere
Proposed Methods for Terraforming Mars. No, it's not just science fiction!

Geology 401 - Structural Geology
Paleomagnetism and Applications to Structural Geology. This paper explains what in the world I was doing spinning all those rocks this year.

Fall 2002

Computational Science 753 - Observations of Earth and its Climate
Creation of NDVI images from level 1B AVHRR data retrieved from George Mason University antenna. The first paper I have ever written that includes original research.

Geography 553 - Advanced Geographic Information Systems
The integration of remote sensing data with GIS. Wins the award for the boringest paper I have ever written.

Undergraduate Work

Fall 2001

Geology 317 - Geomorphology
My term paper for this class which discusses subsidence due to groundwater extraction in the Santa Clara Valley, California, which is the area where I grew up.

Geology 302 - Mineralogy
A series of short papers I wrote about different aspects of the mineral topaz.

Summer 2001

Health 330 - Nutrition
The outline for my presentation on the detrimental health effects of bulimia nervosa.

Spring 2001

Classics 340 - Greek and Roman Epic
A paper speculating on why Virgil asked for the unfinished manuscript of the Aeneid to be burned right before he died.

Biology 104 - Introductory Biology II
A short essay that discusses an article in the Washington Post about blood clots during air travel.

Fall 2000

Anthropology 114 - Cultural Anthropology
The link will take you to my "fieldwork project" about cultural patterns I observed while riding the CUE bus.

Biology 103 - Introductory Biology I
The link will take you to my class short essay which discusses an article in the Washington Post about plant-based medicines.

Summer 2000

History 387 - Myth of a Master Race
The link will take you to the term paper I wrote for this class, "Physiognomy and Racism," which discusses scientists in the 19th century who used facial measurements to support Aryan racial theories.

Spring 2000

English 302 - Advanced Composition for Natural Science majors
Some essays and the term paper from this distance-ed class I took.

Fall 1999

English 201 - Reading Texts
Some essays I've written about different pieces of literature we studied.

Physics 251 - Computer Techniques in Physics
In this class we were assigned to make a web site displaying the results of our work over the semester. The link will take you to that website.
